Many people today are suffering from the increased energy costs throughout the United States. The prices of oil having sky rocketed, it makes it almost impossible to not scream when you see your energy bill and you cannot be blamed, it is a frightening thing. Energy has become a precious resource, considering we use it every day. For our phones, lights, computers, everything in the average Americans home today is powered primarily by electricity or gas these days. Gas prices are going up and in the last year some states have even seen it rise to over four dollars a gallon, so how are we suppose to power our lives when the economy has taken a turn for the worst and prices of doing so are dramatically increasing. Less money and more costs doesn’t lead to an easy situation for most people, which is why people are starting to look towards alternative power sources and methods of powering their home. So what about wind power? What is it that makes this method so preferable and so convenient for people today, after all who would have thought wind could create power?
Most people when thinking about using wind to power their homes immediately think expensive, most people are misled into believing that using an alternate power source is an out of reach idea for them but the truth of the matter is, it’s not. It’s as simple as forking over the money to learn to build some sort of renewable energy power source, which isn’t as expensive as people have been led to believe. Most people make the choice by using one of two of the primary renewable energy sources which are expelled by the earth. They either go with wind power or solar power, which one to use is a matter of opinion but wind power has become the increasingly popular choice.
There are certain things important to consider when thinking of using wind power to power your home, these things can usually be avoided, but it is important to take them into consideration. With wind power you must use a generator, most of which are pretty tall so it’s important to find out from your community government what the restrictions are regarding this large power source. Another key aspect is location, states more towards the center of the country like Missouri gain most benefit from wind power as there is enough wind to keep them going strong, where as places such as New York, you have to be more careful. Space and convenience are also big deciding factors, is this generator going to be your whole back yard? And is the noise going to bother the neighbors? You should keep these questions in mind when deciding to purchase or build your wind generator that way you aren’t left with a large inconvenience. Lastly there is somewhat of an issue with wildlife, some people have had problems with birds running into their generators causing problems for them and the neighborhood. However, some people haven’t experienced any problems with it.
Whichever way you go just make sure you look at the decision from all angles and make a well informed choice.

Energy generated by wind is very pure and leaves no negative impact on the environment. The energy of the wind being converted to electrical energy is one of the best forms of energy generation. It is merely rotation of blades or sails, and the wind energy is converted to another more useful form - electricity for your home! Read the rest of this entry »

So you are thinking about building a wind turbine to power your home, and you’re wondering if it is the most cost efficient way to go. Well, building a wind turbine is most certainly cheaper then purchasing one and it tends to pay for itself over time with the costs you’re cutting on electricity bills. What it boils down to for most is the simple question, is spending money now to save money in the long term what I want to do? For most the answer is yes, which is why building a wind turbine to power households has become increasingly popular during the last couple years.
So, what will you need to get started? Well, a workspace is key, most people use a garage or a basement which is free of cost. Otherwise you may after consider the cost of renting a work space which can vary a great deal. The next cost you will have to worry about the most primary aspect is the guide. You should probably be able to find a detailed instruction guide with illustrations at your local bookstore and if not most people buy them online this cost could vary usually between fifteen and fifty dollars depending on if you can find it discounted or not and where you’re purchasing from. Most people also need help, and while some people may have friends or family to help out for free if you want the extra convenience in most cases you’ll have to shell out a few bucks at least.
While most things can be generalized and the cost is going to be much cheaper then purchasing an already constructed version of the generator below is a small outline of some costs you may experience.
- DC Motor – You need to purchase a DC motor that is capable of creating at least 1000 watts (w) of power. Most guides or manuals will include details on exactly what to use and some can even be shipped directly to your house, the average cost being about $30.00
- Blades – You will want to purchase wood that is used for creating machines of this size when making the blades.
To create a 1000w wind generator the average cost can be about one hundred and fifty dollars, which considering the price of a new one already pre-built can be three thousand to ten thousand is not so bad at all. It will most likely save you that much on your electric bill the first couple of months anyway and is much more environmentally safe and leaves you feeling guilt free. Building a wind generator can also be a good opportunity for bonding, so if you know someone you think would like to help who you think you could spend a little more time with, get them involved and make the project a fun one not just something you have to do. Building a wind power machine can be confusing without the right guide, so make sure you do your research before choosing one.

Like all other aspects to life, the choice between alternative energy sources is a two-sided coin which can be quite the complicated decision if you are uneducated about the various differences between the two. While both are incredibly beneficial for our environment, deciding which one to use should be solely based circumstantially on your living conditions and the source which will be more useful for you. Solar power and wind power have both gained a great deal of publicity with the recent increase in gas prices, people are sick of soaring electricity bills when it is much more simple to create your own electricity.

With prices of energy dramatically increasing, it’s a wonder why people aren’t thinking more open-mindedly about alternative energy sources. Some people believe it is a simple good old fashioned laziness that prevents people from considering these sources; they don’t want to be bothered with the research or time and effort it takes into finding and harnessing these sources. Some people feel it is cost that prevents them from running to alternative methods, fearing that doing so may be out of their budget and as such, pushed out of their mind. The fact of the matter is there are no real unbeatable obstacles to alternative power sources, they are a great way to “live green” and help out the environment and they are even less costly in the long run. Most of us by now are familiar with the harmfulness and expense of using oil powered energy. In using it we are basically paying to rip apart the ozone layer, which is scary because why would we pay to destroy something that protects us? However, while unfortunate, most people don’t build home wind turbines to promote a cleaner greener environment, most people do it because of the cost. Read the rest of this entry »
